Most taxis are painted cream and some, are black and green (the old colors), and they have a roof-light indication to identify them and to let you know if available or not.

The fares will show on the meter counter and always depend on the traveled distance.
You can either hail a passing taxi or you can go to one of the stations which exist at different downtown areas or at most resorts. The taxi station at Praia da Luz is located by the church.

You can book a private hire taxi by visiting the station or by telephone. For longer journeys, the fare should always be agreed beforehand (you can negotiate an hourly or half-day rate). On weekly days, from 10 pm to 6 am or on weekends and holidays, the rate increases by 20%. In general, tipping is approximately 5% to 10% of the fare or rounded up to the nearest Euro. Luggage is charged according to a fixed rate chart.

Most taxis are licensed to carry up to 4 passengers however some van taxis have a special license to carry up to 6 passengers and if you require one of them, it is best to call a taxi company in advance and reserve this type of cab.
